ADHD Diagnosis and Management

From 1st December 2025 there has been a change in legislation which allows Qld General Practitioners to prescribe stimulant medication for ADHD for all patients.  Previously prescriptions for those over 18 years of age required psychiatry input.

At Neighbourhood Medical we are supportive of this change which will improve access to care for many people.

ADHD is a complex neurodevelopmental condition and not all General Practitioners have the experience necessary to confidently and appropriately manage this condition independently.  Speaking to your regular GP is the best initial course of action if you are keen to explore an ADHD diagnosis for yourself or your child.

Children with existing ADHD Diagnosis and already on medication

If your child has a diagnosis of ADHD which has been previously made by a specialist and they have already been commenced on stimulant medication, most of the GPs at Neighbourhood Medical will be able to continue to prescribe this medication.   Documentation of previous diagnosis and current medication regime will be required.  Ongoing prescribing will require in clinic assessments at a minimum of 6 monthly intervals.   Our reception team will be able to ensure you are booked in with an appropriate GP to facilitate this.

Children seeking ADHD Diagnosis or new commencement of Stimulant Medication

The diagnosis of ADHD in children is  complex and will generally require more than one appointment.  If you suspect that your child might have ADHD and would like to explore this further you can make an ADHD assessment appointment (45 minutes) with Dr Nicole White or Dr Nikki Twomey.  In some cases specialist referral will still be required.

Adults with existing ADHD Diagnosis and already on medication

If you have a diagnosis of ADHD and have previously been commenced on stimulant medication your GP at Neighbourhood Medical will be able to continue to prescribe this medication.  Documentation of previous diagnosis and current medication regime will be required.  Ongoing prescribing will require in clinic assessments at a minimum of 6 monthly intervals.  Specialist involvement may continue to be required in certain more complex situations.

Adults seeking ADHD Diagnosis

If you are an existing adult patient of Neighbourhood Medical and are seeking to explore a diagnosis of ADHD please book an ADHD assessment appointment (45 minutes) to commence this process.  Our reception team will be able to ensure that you are booked with an appropriate GP within the clinic.

If you are a new patient to Neighbourhood Medical seeking diagnosis of ADHD as your primary reason for attending,  please speak to our reception team, we will have limited appointments available for this situation.

We are keen to support our patients with ADHD or suspected ADHD locally within our practice when it is safe and appropriate to do so.  As GPs at Neighbourhood Medical we strive to provide thorough, holistic medical care that is tailored to the needs of our individual patients.

Whilst ADHD management is generally within our scope of practice, the ADHD journey is unique for each person and in some situations GP management will not be appropriate.  Please trust your GPs advice in this regard.
